The key to the film’s success is knowing what to change – the scale of the special effects is worlds away from that of the original – and what to cling to. And with a screenplay that was co-scripted by Simon Pegg (who also plays Scotty), the gags tend towards the engagingly nerdy, self-referential variety that will best connect with the fanbase, particularly those who cherish the slightly clunky tone of the original television series. Humour, rather than the Enterprise’s warp thrust, is the driving force here.

I really don't have any complaints about the movie at all with it being a perfect entry into the series and I can't wait for what's next.A touch of existential disillusionment and some father issues notwithstanding, this latest instalment of the space adventure doesn’t take itself too seriously.

The CGI was spectacular in the film with all the action shots looking glorious despite ever growing destruction. The story was solid creating a sense of intrigue and discovery while still feeling contained around the core characters. Star Trek Beyond continues to explore the universe while developing its strong crew of members and never losing focus. I will however complain that the camera was somewhat annoying with how many rotating shots there were, it was excessive. The cinematography of the film was also beautiful capturing the depth of space while still keeping things grounded. We're also given a strong new female character Jaylah (Sofia Boutella) that was a welcomed combative member of the crew and fit in well. Everyone had more depth added to their characters and the acting was also well done, it's great to see that this younger Enterprise crew has settled well into their roles.Ĭhris Pine once again leads strong with his role of Kirk whereas Bones (Karl Urban) has only gotten funnier with this one and it was nice to see him place an essential role this time around. The world they explored was so unique and it was great that they still kept it small in scale touching on important aspects for each member of the crew. The film was spectacular not only with story, but with the effects and awe of space being captured beautifully. It featured all new locations that tested the core of the crew and had one of the best uses of the Beastie Boys "Sabotage" ever. I honestly had no issues with any part of this film as it was well delivered not only with its action, but with a story of intrigue. While some fans of the Star Trek series may have an issue with the pace of the new series I personally love this more exciting action focused version of the franchise and it delivers well here. The story then picks up in smaller more intimate groups as key members are split apart whereas others are captured by the locals. This takes the crew through an unexplored nebula for which an attack is waiting causing the Enterprise to crash land on this uncharted planet. That is until during a routine restock at a new mega space station that there's a distress signal and the crew goes on a rescue. The crew of the Enterprise is over halfway through their five year mission in deep space exploration and things are getting a bit stale for some of the key crew members. The recent reboot of the Star Trek series has had some solid films and that strongly continues with the third entry of Star Trek Beyond.
